Matt Odell on Building Past the Bitcoin Protocol

Interviews·October 9, 2026

Bitcoin's base protocol changes slowly on purpose, and much of the everyday progress happens in the software layered on top of it. That was the central theme of a recent episode of Ledger Cast, where hosts Brian Krogsgard and Josh Olszewicz spoke with Matt Odell, the bitcoiner known as the father of the #stackingsats hashtag.

The conversation covered wallet interfaces, privacy features, coin management and the Lightning Network. Wallet design gets less attention than protocol debates, but it is where most people form their first impression of bitcoin. Coin management, meaning how a user chooses which specific coins to spend, is another area where software decisions can either protect or leak a person's financial history.

Privacy got considerable attention. The show notes point to Samourai's Whirlpool coinjoin feature and the Wasabi wallet, two tools that try to make it harder to trace the links between a user's coins. Those examples illustrate a recurring theme in the discussion: privacy on bitcoin is largely a product of how software is built around the chain, not something the base layer provides by default.

Lightning, the payment network that runs on top of bitcoin, rounded out the discussion. The episode's links include Breez, Zap and ACINQ's Phoenix wallet as examples of how Lightning is reaching end users through apps.

The hosts stressed that the episode is educational and not investment advice. Listeners who want to act on any of the tools discussed should research them first.
